The race for Sacramento mayor is officially underway for the November general election. Now that the primary is over and the top two candidates are set, we take time today to catch up with epidemiologist Dr. Flo Cofer to talk about lessons learned from the primary, what’s next, and how she plans on winning over voters who wanted someone else for mayor.

Dr. Flojaune Cofer just shocked the California political establishment by defeating three well known politicians in the Sacramento mayoral primary – a race widely heralded as the most closely watched in the state due to its razor-thin vote margins in the early count.

Like a lot of Sacramentans, Flojaune Cofer loves the city’s cafes, live music and walking along the American River.
“And if it’s Kings season, you might catch me at a game ringing my cow bell!” Cofer said, bursting with laughter, during an interview at Long Island Ice Cream south of Oak Park. “I was a season ticket holder for 12 seasons.”
But in her campaign for Sacramento mayor, Cofer said she’s unlike any other candidates. That’s true in several ways.

We could cite other examples of flawed decision-making among Sacramento leaders, but there is the bigger point to make here. We believe that the remedy for Sacramento City Hall is fresh leadership. That’s why The Bee Editorial Board endorsed Flojaune Cofer for mayor.
Though she faces three veteran politicians in her candidacy for mayor, Cofer offers the most sober assessment of what is needed in Sacramento. She stands alone as the public advocate who understands the issues and knows the players at city hall but isn’t of city hall.

I appreciate the distinctions made between mayoral candidates. As a licensed clinical social worker, I value Dr. Flojaune Cofer’s vision of social workers and police officers working in an interdisciplinary manner for the greater support and safety of the community.
It is also important to recognize that Cofer does not accept any corporate money.

While Dr. Flojaune Cofer had several sources of support, her pot of campaign cash came overwhelming from individual and small dollar donations. Of her $174,440-plus war chest, some $141,861 of it poured in directly from voters. Many were doctors, nurses, mental health professionals and religious leaders, but the professions also veered into the arts: Cofer was the only mayoral candidate this year to get contributions from people listing themselves as poets, artists, writers and filmmakers.
Organized labor, a bracket that didn’t include public safety or building trade unions in SN&R’s categorical system (those were both separate brackets), amounted to Cofer’s second-largest area of support. She received $9,550 from those union sources.

In a sense, running for mayor fits into her life’s mission. Cofer is the daughter of public school teachers who grew up in Pittsburgh, Pa. On her campaign website, she features family photos of herself as a child with her parents, and the smiles in those photos project warmth and closeness. Sadly, Cofer’s father Raymond is no longer here to feel the immense pride any dad would feel if his daughter was running for mayor. He died at 47 of congestive heart failure in 1994 when Cofer was only 11.

“Threatening the people who are fighting – and succeeding – to create solutions is a special type of cruelty,” Dr. Cofer said. “How many times are we going to try to criminalize poverty before we realize it is a bad idea?”

“We should all be working together to find short and long-term solutions,” said Cofer, “which is why Thien Ho threatening action against a safe ground site — which is actively creating an immediate and quite successful solution — is so incredibly appalling.”

But it was Cofer — an epidemiologist, a progressive organizer and a political newcomer known as Dr. Flo — who emerged to thunderous applause as the clear crowd favorite. Sacramento NAACP vice president Tijuana Barnes announced at the end that in a straw poll of audience members, Cofer won 72 out of 82 votes.
